OCULAR DISEASE

Sight threatening diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other eye conditions often have no outward signs or symptoms, which is why comprehensive exams that include a dilated eye evaluation, are important to protect vision. In an effort to provide a more thorough eye exam, our practice has incorporated digital retina imaging, including the HD iCare OCT retinal scan.

Like an MRI of the eye but taking only seconds to perform, the HD iCare provides high definition cross sections of your retina and optic nerve, which can reveal subclinical signs of disease that may be difficult to detect in traditional examination methods. Therefore, combined with your ocular health evaluation, this state of the art technology can help detect potentially vision threatening and systemic diseases in their very early stages. They also provide your doctor with a permanent baseline record of your retinal examination for comparison during future exams.

PEDIATRICS

Vision screenings are part of your child’s ocular health, but should not be used as a substitute for a comprehensive ocular health evaluation. Although a child may see 20/20, the eye muscles in children are very strong and may hide a prescription.

A dilated eye exam is recommended for children starting at 3 months to rule out eye conditions such as tumors, strabismus (eye turn), and amblyopia (lazy eye). In addition, the dilation will relax the eye muscles and allow your eye care professional to assess if a glasses prescription is needed.
